This system of nationally important roads, established in the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA), includes the Interstate Highway System and other significant principal arterial roads important to the nation's economy, defense, and mobility. The National Highway System Connectors are those roads which connect the NHS to major intermodal terminals (i.e., airports, bus terminals, train stations, ports, etc.), but are not actually a part of the National Highway System.
